Skanes brothers carry Hubbard

It’s been a tough couple of weeks for Robeson, who opened the season with five straight wins. Last week they were defeated by Morgan Park and Thursday the Raiders were without leading rusher Devon Sanders at full strength.

The woes continued as Hubbard earned a 27-14 victory Thursday afternoon at Stagg Stadium in the Prairie State Conference.

It didn’t take long for the Greyhounds (6-1, 4-0) to get on the board as they scored the game’s first touchdown when quarterback Quincy Skanes ran off tackle 87 yards on their first play from scrimmage. Hubbard built a 14-0 lead when Quintin Skanes scored on a one-yard dive. The play was set up by a 39-yard run to the 1-yard line by Anthony Johnson.

Quincy Skanes scored his second touchdown on a 37-yard run as Hubbard built the lead to 20-0. Sanders scored a touchdown at the end of the second quarter and near the end of the fourth quarter, both on two-yard runs. The fourth-quarter score cut the lead to 20-14 with 2:42 remaining. The Raiders (5-2, 2-2) recovered the onside kick but were whistled for being offside. Quintin Skanes then put the game out of reach on a two-yard run as Hubbard drove out the time.

Hubbard was awarded the Brown Jug in honor of winning the Roy Curry Bowl, as both head coaches and several assistants all played for Hall of Famer Curry.

Quincy Skanes finished with six carries for 165 yard and two touchdowns and Quintin Skanes had eight carries for 37 yards and two touchdowns and had an interception on defense.

“We are right there,” said Hubbard coach Elton Harris.

“If we clean up the little things, then this team as a chance to do something special. This game for both teams was an honor to one of the greatest coaches in public league history,” Robeson coach Fabray Collins said his team has to get things together. “We got a little full of ourselves, now it is back to the drawing board. We still have a lot of good football ahead of us.”

Sanders who is suffering from a slight hamstring pull was held to under 100 yard for the time this season.
