Addison Trail blanks Proviso East

Addison Trail forced five turnovers and shut out its opponent for the fourth time this season in a 35-0 victory over Proviso East Saturday afternoon in Maywood.

The stingy Blazers defense has only allowed 13 points through six games this season.

“It starts from the coaching. Coach Tate has always got us in sync, working together,” said defensive back Vince Beltrano, who had two interceptions on Saturday. “He’s always got a great game plan every week, a huge scouting report, and we just follow what he tells us to do.”

Addison Trail (6-0, 4-0) coach Paul Parpet gave the credit to his talented players.

“We’ve got some athletes out there that play hard, and we can get to the football in a hurry,” Parpet said. “And we’ve got a lot of experience out there. That helps. We’ve got to have the players.”

The Addison Trail offense took advantage of the strong performance of the defense by scoring 28 points off the five turnovers.

Lineman Dylan Domek’s forced fumble on Proviso East’s (1-5, 1-2) first possession led to a two-yard touchdown run by the Blazers’ Anthony Catanese.

Proviso East’s defense kept the Pirates in the game by holding the Blazers offense in check the rest of the first half. Addison Trail only led 7-0 at halftime.

Beltrano and linebacker Kevin Kent intercepted passes on the first two Proviso East drives of the second half, and both times the interceptions led to Addison Trail touchdowns.

Catanese and Anthony Messina cashed in with touchdowns of two and one yards as the Blazers built a 21-0 lead by the end of the third quarter.

Catanese ran 43 yards for his third touchdown of the game to put the Blazers up 28-0 with six minutes left in the fourth quarter. Catanese finished the game with 12 carries for 77 yards and three touchdowns.

Beltrano’s second interception of the game led to an 18-yard touchdown run by Messina that put the Blazers up 35-0 late in the fourth quarter. Messina ran the ball 11 times for 96 yards and two touchdowns.

While the Blazers defense has been shutting down opponents all year, they had been doing it without forcing many turnovers until Saturday afternoon.

“Turnovers haven’t come easy for our defense. We’ve been shutting down the run, shutting down the pass, but we haven’t gotten turnovers,” said Beltrano. “This week we actually emphasized on getting the ball for our offense, and today we executed.”

Addison Trail, off to the best start in school history, will face a tough test next Friday when they play fellow undefeated Glenbard West at home.
