Marmion’s football team is on a hot streak.

The Cadets won their third consecutive game in Suburban Christian Conference action over Blue Division opponent Wheaton Academy, 24-6, Saturday at Fichtel Field on Marmion’s homecoming.

“We are having really good playcalling and the offense is clicking,” Marmion quarterback Charlie Faunce said of the Cadets’ winning streak. “The (offensive) line is blocking well, the backs are running hard (and) the defense is playing well. All of that is helping us win.”

Marmion is that much closer to a playoff appearance, as it improved to 4-2 overall and 2-1 in the conference. Wheaton Academy dropped to 1-5 overall and 0-3 in league play.

Jake Ruddy scored two of Marmion’s touchdowns. The first was an 80-yard run with 39.1 seconds left in the first quarter right after a Kyle Kozak interception.

Ruddy’s second score was on a 9-yard pass from Faunce (4-for-6, 69 yards) at 9:05 in the second that pushed Marmion ahead 21-0.

“Jake Ruddy is an athlete,” Marmion coach Dan Thorpe said. “He’s playing both ways, offensively and defensively, he’s got some hands and speed. You need someone who can take it to the house, and Jake has that athletic ability.”

The Cadets’ first score was on a Stuart Quinn’s 2-yard run in the opening quarter. Marmion’s final points came from kicker A.J. Friedman’s 48-yard field goal at the 4:04 mark in the third.

Wheaton Academy’s points came in the second, when Joel Swick ran for an 85-yard touchdown that left the halftime score at 21-6.

“I’m so proud of our defense — they played a heck of a game,” Wheaton Academy coach Ben Wilson said. “Our goal is to keep getting better every week.”

Despite the Cadets getting better every week, they are still battling injuries. Tight end Matt Lally was out with a stress fracture in his ankle for Saturday’s game. Garret Becker is day-to-day. Tight end Mike Shares is on his way back, according to Thorpe.

“We preach, ‘You never know when the phone is going to ring,’” Thorpe said. “(The second and third-teamers) don’t get too many reps in practice, but we still expect them to know assignments and play hard. We tell those kids to hang in there and that they have a role to play.”
