Second half powers Simeon past Dunbar

Dunbar had Simeon seemingly on the ropes in the first half but couldn’t deliver the knock-out blow as the Wolverines pull things together to get a 40-12 victory Friday night at Gately Stadium in the Land of Lincoln conference play.
Dunbar quarterback Darvell Harris wanted to make an impression and did an admiral job, especially in the first half as he led his team to a 12-0 lead.
Harris scored Dunbar’s first touchdown on a two-yard run with 7:15 remaining in the first quarter, then threw a 26-yard touchdown pass to Trayvon Harris midway in the second quarter. The Mighty Men blew two golden opportunities when they had two drives stalled inside the 15-yard line.
From that point on the Wolverines got things going starting with a 30-yard touchdown reception to receiver John Gardner from quarterback Robert Gregory as the half ended with Simeon trailing 14-6.
The flood gates opened on Dunbar in the second half as Simeon scored 34 unanswered points.
Sharoid Roach scored on a 15-yard run with 9:57 in the third quarter and the two point conversion put Simeon up 14-12. Gregory was injured on the drive and did not play from that point on.
The Wolverines did not skip a beat as his backup Elcee Burks threw two touchdowns to Cynettie Brown 22 and 60 yards. Paris Ratcliff and Durell Thomas each scored late fourth-quarter touchdowns.
Burks was 4 of 7 for 157 yards and two touchdowns in relief of Gregory who was 6 of 10 for 127 yards and one touchdown.
Simeon coach Dante Culbreath said, “The conditions definitely had an affect on the team. The rain, the lightening and the game delay just got us out of sync, but also give credit to Dunbar. They came ready to play and fought hard the entire game.” Harris led Dunbar 17 of 28 for 256 yards and one touchdown.
“We had our chances and didn’t capitalize,” said Dunbar coach Glen Johnson.
