Glenbrook South uses clock, earns ‘W’

Once Glenbrook South got New Trier’s offense off the field for the first time, the Titans kept Jack Nykaza and Trevians on the sideline.

After the Trevians started the game with an 18-play scoring series that last 10-plus minutes and led to a field goal, the Titans took control of the CSL South contest.

Glenbrook South scored two touchdowns before the break and never trailed again in its 21-10 win in Glenview. The Titans didn’t allow New Trier a first down the rest of the half after the opening possession.

“They took it to us,” said Glenbrook South senior lineman Michael Demos, whose team extended its winning streak to four on the season. “It was our own fault for not coming out ready to hit. We got to work on that.”

Kevin Schroeder carried the Titans by running 21 times for 143 yards and scoring all three touchdowns, including a 65-yarder to give Glenbrook South a 7-3 lead midway through the second quarter. The senior added a one-yard touchdown run with 58 seconds left in the first half.

But Schroeder’s fumble in the third quarter opened the door for the Trevians.

Daniel Olaniyan got into the end zone on the ensuing possession on a nine-yard run four seconds into the fourth quarter.

Glenbrook South (5-1 overall, 2-0 CSL South) answered immediately as Schroeder returned the kickoff 37 yards and then ran four times to get the Titans back up two scores.

“New Trier’s a good team, and they had the momentum early,” Demos said.

Olaniyan ran 18 times for 99 yards and the team’s only touchdown. Nykaza threw two second-half interceptions as the Trevians (3-3, 0-2) lost to the Titans for the fifth time in a row.
