Ruling on Hurley is upheld

Chicago Public Schools Chief Education Officer Noemi Donoso has upheld the ruling that makes senior quarterback DaeShaun Hurley ineligible to play at Julian.

Hurley transferred from Morgan Park to Julian in the offseason, but has yet to play for his new school. Public League director of sports administration Calvin Davis ruled Hurley ineligible two weeks ago, citing a CPS bylaw banning athletic transfers.

Hurley’s family unsuccessfully sought an injunction in Cook County Circuit Court that would have allowed him to play, and also appealed to the Chicago Public School’s Athletic Board. That group upheld Davis’ ruling last week and on Monday, Donoso let it stand.

“In the decision, the CEO’s office also noted that this result is in accordance with an Illinois High School Association bylaw that addresses an athlete’s eligibility following a transfer of schools,” CPS spokesman Frank Shuftan wrote in an email.

According to the ruling released by Donoso, she reserves the right to review the eligibility decision “in the event evidence is presented to me that a court has issued an order granting custody to [Hurley’s] father.”

Michael Latz, an attorney for Hurley’s family, said Monday that he expects Dana Bryant, Hurley’s mother, “will attempt to obtain an order in the Circuit Court of Cook County that reflects the change in custody.”

Julian (2-3) plays King at Gately Stadium on Friday.
