Bogan can’t hang with Hubbard

For a quarter and a half, winless Bogan gave Hubbard all it could handle, but the rest of the game turned into a nightmare as Hubbard claimed a 57-20 victory Saturday afternoon at Gately Stadium in the Prairie State conference.

The two teams traded touchdowns with Quincy Skanes connecting on a 60-yard touchdown pass to wide receiver Ricky Backstrom and running 24 yards to the end zone on a quarterback draw. He was equaled by Bogan quarterback Terrence Wafford who threw two touchdown passes, a 40 yarder to Omar McCormick and a 28 yarder to Quintin Stephens with 6:27 remaining in the second quarter.

The Greyhounds (4-1, 2-0) got things rolling starting with an interception by Quinton Skanes. In a span of five minutes Hubbard scored three touchdowns, a 26-yard touchdown pass to Santino Thomas, a three-yard run by Anthony Johnson and a two-yard dive by Larry Howard, as Hubbard built a 36-12 halftime lead.

Backstrom scored his second touchdown of the game on a 67-yard interception return and Quincy Skanes followed that up with a 55-yard bomb to Thomas, as the lead swelled to 50-12. The Bengals (0-5, 0-2) did have one more spot light moment on a 97-yard kickoff return with 5:26 remaining in the third quarter by Brian Leonard. Quincy Skanes ended the scoring on a nine-yard run with 7:42 remaining in the game.

Skanes was 9 of 15 for 212 yard and four touchdowns and had eight rushes for 89 yards and two touchdowns.

“The interception by my brother just changed the momemtum,” said Quincy. “We were a little flat in the beginning but we just started executing better offensively and defensively and the game just came to us.”

“We’re still a little nicked up and we are starting four freshmen and two sophomores,” said Hubbard coach Elton Harris. “We should be ready in the next week or so.” Bogan coach Sam Jones said his team has to get mentally tougher. “We are right there in games and we don’t have the mentality to fight through a tough stretch. It is a learning process.”
