Warren’s football team dented the win column for the first time this season, and the Blue Devils did it in a big way, celebrating Homecoming with a dominating 48-6 victory over Zion-Benton on Friday night.

Warren (1-4) is still very much in the playoff picture, as its four toughest games were the four early-season losses.

Against Zion, the Devils looked like a well-oiled machine.

Quarterback Adam Reuss completed 13-of-17 passes for 171 yards and two touchdowns.

His favorite targets were Mitch Munda (6 catches, 78 yards, 1 touchdown) and Connor Iwema (4 catches, 74 yards, 1 touchdown).

The top runner was Davonte Willcox, who carried 18 times for 115 yards and a touchdown.

Warren’s defense was also dominant.

Middle linebacker Erik Johnson returned a Zion fumble three yards for a second-quarter touchdown, and then his interception seconds later set up the score that blew the top off the contest.

Warren led 28-0 until Zion-Benton used a trick play to score with 2:12 left in the first half.

Quarterback Eric Pasiewicz handed off to Carlton Reynolds, who then threw a pass to Derrick Reynolds (no relation) for a 47-yard touchdown.

That made it 28-6 at halftime, but Warren added a pair of third-quarter scores on a 3-yard run by Tyler Keith and an 8-yard run by Pat Kenney. The final TD was a 2-yard run by Kent Richter in the fourth quarter.

“Five weeks, and we finally got one. It feels good,” said Warren coach Dave Mohapp. “I’m very happy for our team. We’ve had some challenging weeks to try and get ourselves in the win column.

“They’ve worked very hard. They deserve that.”

Even at 1-4, Mohapp knows the playoffs are in site.

“Our backs are against the wall. They talk about a cat on its ninth life ... well, that’s sort of us,” Mohapp said. “But our kids our competitive kids.

“We want to make the playoffs, and that means every week is the most important week of the season.”

Next up for Warren is another home game, with winless Mundelein providing the opposition.

Zion-Benton (1-4) will host Round Lake in a non-conference contest.
