Montini quickly got over a disappointing one-point loss to Marian Central last week with a 55-14 victory over Aurora Christian Friday night in a Suburban Christian Conference crossover game, handing the Eagles (4-1) their first loss of the season.
“Last week’s loss was a tough one,” said Montini’s Iowa-bound defensive tackle Jaleel Johnson said of the victory. “But we stuck it out through the week, just worked hard and got back to where we wanted to be.”
Following an Eagles’ three-and-out to start the game, the Broncos (3-2) took their opening possession 85 yards down the field in a quick, no-huddle, Wildcat-style offense with backup quarterback Joe Borsellino rushing for 40 yards and completing one long pass to Nebraska-bound receiver Jordan Westerkamp for 20.
Borsellino capped the drive with a three-yard scoring run, and it never seemed as if the Eagles recovered from the quick blow.
“It caught them off guard and they didn’t expect it,” Westerkamp said. “It’s always a killing blow when you score on your first drive, really quickly. It kills their momentum. We made some big plays.”
The Eagles went three-and-out on their next four possessions, all of which led to Montini scores. The Broncos led 27-0 after the first quarter.
Aurora Christian’s offensive struggles included five dropped passes – including a would-be touchdown from Western Michigan-bound quarterback Anthony Maddie to Cory Windle.
If Windle would’ve hauled in the pass, it would’ve cut the Montini lead to 13-7 midway through the first quarter.
“That was the play of the game,” Eagles coach Don Beebe said. “That was a difference-maker in the game. If we score there, who knows what would have happened? Would we have stopped them at all? I (just) know this game is played on emotion.
“I’m not sure what was wrong with our wide receivers tonight. We looked like a deer in headlights.”
Borsellino finished with 73 yards rushing and three touchdowns on eight carries while Mark Gorogianis completed 12 of 15 passes for 216 yards and three scores. Westerkamp finished with five catches for 83 yards and a touchdown.
Maddie was just 15 of 34 passing for 176 yards and a score. He was also intercepted three times.
