Crete-Monee rolls past Kankakee

The scary thing is Crete-Monee’s Marcus Terrell was dead serious Friday night when he said, ``We didn’t execute the way we were supposed to.’’

This after the junior quarterback threw first-half touchdowns of 53 and 58 yards to wide receiver LaQuan Treadwell as the No. 12 Warriors rolled in their Southland opener to a 35-7 victory over Kankakee. Terrell completed 6 of 10 passes for 169 yards.

Even linebacker John Fasel, who had two fumble recoveries, said, ``We had a lot of mistakes. Mentally, we have to get better. We are playing pretty good physically right now.’’

Good enough that fans of the Warriors (5-0, 1-0) are harkening back to memories of the 1952 Crete-Monee team that went undefeated.

``We wanted to get the victory, and leave the game healthy,’’ Warrior coach Jerry Verde said. ``We did that. And we showed good sportsmanship in the second half.’’

The Warriors built a 32-0 halftime lead on touchdown runs of two and four yards by running back Kenneth Kidd and one yard by Kyle Tilley. Kidd rushed 18 times for 107 yards.

The Warriors did not throw a pass in the second half, in a show of high school class, but Carlos Posada booted a 32-yard field goal, a rarity for Crete-Monee, in the third quarter.

``On video, this was the best team I’ve seen since I have been at Kankakee,’’ Kankakee coach Cornell Middlebrook said. ``This is the best Crete team I have seen.’’

Quarterback Kyle Love, who rushed for 73 yards, scored on an eight-yard run for the Kays (0-5, 0-2) in the fourth quarter.

Five penalties for 40 yards are one area for the Warriors to work on, as one holding penalty brought back a touchdown run.
