Hurley’s appeal ruling rejected, still ineligible

Updated: September 21, 2011 8:46PM

DaeShaun Hurley’s appeal of a ruling that keeps him from playing football for Julian was rejected on Wednesday by the Public League Athletic Board.

Hurley, a senior quarterback, transferred from Morgan Park to Julian in the offseason. Last week he was ruled ineligible for one year by Public League director of sports administration Calvin Davis, who cited a Chicago Public Schools bylaw banning transfers for athletic reasons.

A lawyer for Hurley’s family then sought an injunction that would allow him to play, but the request was denied by a Cook County Circuit Court judge on Friday.

The next step in Hurley’s attempt to gain eligibility was Wednesday’s appeal. According to Public League spokesman Frank Shuftan, “a written record of this decision will be forward to the [Chicago Public Schools’] CEO’s office within 24 hours and the CEO or his designee will then have two school days to issue a final decision on the appeal.”

“It’s always unfortunate when a student-athlete loses eligibility in situations like this,” Davis said. “Everyone must communicate better and understand the rules that apply to athletes who transfer. This will help preserve the eligibility of student-athletes in the future.”

Julian (2-2) plays Fenger at Eckersall Stadium on Saturday.

Attempts to reach Hurley’s family and his lawyer, Michael Latz, were unsuccessful on Wednesday night.
