Hurley ruled ineligible at Julian

Senior quarterback DaeShaun Hurley’s transfer from Morgan Park to Julian was denied on Monday by Calvin Davis, the Public League’s director of sports administration.

Davis said in an email that Hurley and another Morgan Park transfer, Brandon Peppers, were ruled ineligible for one year because the moves were for athletic reasons – which is against Public League by-laws. Peppers also was ruled ineligible because of a residency issue.

There is an appeal process for eligibility rulings, but it wasn’t immediately clear whether Hurley or Peppers would continue their attempts to play for Julian.

If the ruling stands, it effectively ends the prep career of one of the Public League’s premier quarterbacks. Hurley, a 6-foot-1, 180-pounder, is being recruited by a number of major-college programs, including Illinois, Iowa, Indiana, Purdue, Arizona and West Virginia,

“The kid was devastated,” said Julian coach Jason Richardson, a former Morgan Park assistant who left along with several players after long-time head coach Lexie Spurlock was let go earlier this year.

“His teammates tried to pick him up, but you could see he was not himself. ... His parents are trying to figure out what their next step is going to be. But this is not just about football. It’s about a kid’s future.”
