Gregory returns, Simeon routs

At the end of last season, the football game between Public League powers Simeon and Morgan Park was one of the must-see contests of the year.
This season, with both teams seeking their first wins and suffering from quarterback problems, the game still carries weight.
Simeon’s Robert Gregory, who missed last week’s game with a collarbone injury, was cleared to play before the game and helped lead the No. 20 Wolverines to a 47-7 rout of the Mustangs Saturday at Gately Stadium.
Morgan Park is playing this season without highly touted quarterback DaeShaun Hurley, who transferred to Julian.
Gregory (four carries, 74 yards) scored the game’s first two touchdowns on runs of eight and 55 yards to stake Simeon (1-2) to a 15-0 first-quarter lead.
“It felt good to get back into action,’’ Gregory said. ‘‘I’m a little rusty and I feel I’m about 75 percent. I’ve been cleared to play by the doctors and I wanted to do everything I could to help the team.”
Tim Jones blocked and recovered a punt in the end zone with 10:05 remaining in the second quarter to put Simeon up 21-0.
Reserve quarterback Elcee Burke, who started in place of Gregory last week, relieved Gregory and finished 4-for-6 for 62 yards and two touchdowns.
Jordan Jackson finished the first-half scoring with a one-yard run to put Simeon ahead 41-0 heading into the half.
Andre Well scored on a one-yard lunge with 5:25 left in the fourth quarter for Morgan Park (0-3).
‘‘If Gregory is at full strength we are 3-0,’’ Simeon coach Dante Culbreathe said. ‘‘He obviously can do things that very few quarterbacks can do.’’
