You knew it was going to be a good night for Glenbard West when Avery Balogh kept ripping off long runs.

And you knew it would be a great night for the Hilltoppers when Tommy Schutt came up with their third interception of the night.

Big plays on both sides of the ball added up to a 31-3 romp for Glenbard West over host Lyons Friday night in a West Suburban Silver opener in Western Springs.

Balogh ran 12 times for 191 yards and three touchdowns for the No. 2 Hilltoppers. Glenbard West (3-0, 1-0) held Lyons without a first down till the final two minutes of the first half and limited the Lions to 33 yards on 22 rushes.

The win avenged a loss to Lyons in Week 9 of last season that cost Glenbard West sole possession of the West Suburban Silver title.

“We’ve been thinking about this game for a long time,” Balogh said.

Schutt, a big body on the defensive line for the Hilltoppers, has been thinking for a long time about picking off a pass. Early in the fourth quarter, his dream came true.

“We had a couple good screen reads today,” said Schutt, a Penn State recruit who is heading out to see the Nittany Lions play Alabama Saturday. “That was one I picked out and I read [the quarterback’s] eyes. ... A score would be nice, but I’ll take an interception for sure.”

Balogh got the scores as well as the yards.

“Our [offensive] line just played outstanding,” he said. “I can’t thank them enough. We were trying to establish the pass, but we took what they offered us.”

“Avery is playing unreal right now,” Glenbard West coach Chad Hetlet said. “He’s got good vision.”

Balogh gave the Hilltoppers a 14-0 first-quarter lead with a pair of scoring runs. He sprinted 41 yards down the right sideline for the first touchdown with 5:26 left and then twisted and turned his way for a 39-yard scoring carry with 50.7 seconds left.

Dan Cavazos pushed the Glenbard West lead to 17-0 with his 38-yard field goal at 8:16 of the second quarter. Lyons got on the board with 15.7 seconds left in the half when Luke Nelson kicked a 22-yard field goal.

Balogh gave the Hilltoppers a 24-3 lead with his third touchdown run, a 50-yarder at 1:25 of the third quarter. Joe Zito’s 14-yard scoring run made it 31-3 with 8:07 to play.

Mike Marston and Matt Marston also had interceptions for Glenbard West.

For Lyons (1-2, 0-1), quarterback Connor Onion was 16-of-35 passing for 170 yards with three interceptions.
