A knee injury to quarterback Reese Fleming proved to be too much for Curie to overcome in a 21-7 loss to Sterling Saturday night at Lane Tech Stadium on Chicago’s Northwest Side.
Sterling, which traveled more than two-and-a-half hours to get to the game, went ahead 14-7 on a 5-yard touchdown run by Treyvon Solis with 6:45 left in the game. A 20-yard run by Alan Lewis with 48 seconds remaining provided insurance.
“Anytime you have a Division-I athlete go down it’s going to be tough to replace him,” said Curie coach Tyson LeBlanc.
Sterling (1-1) opened the game with a 13-play, 59-yard drive that lasted 7:32 and ended with a 2-yard touchdown run by Alejandro Rivera.
Curie (1-1) had opportunities to tie the game in the first half, but dropped passes and penalties stifled its offense. The Condors had 43 yards of offense in the first half and were penalized 75 yards.
The second half looked promising as the Condors opened the third quarter on a 6-play, 65-yard drive that tied the game on an 18-yard scramble by Fleming. Fleming then gave Curie the ball at their own 40-yard-line following a 20-yard punt return, but the Iowa-bound senior injured himself on the the play and did not return.
Sophomore Jerome Thomas took over, but the offense struggled for the rest of the game.
“We had to step up,” said Kevonta McIntyre, who led Curie with 121 yards rushing on 16 carries. “We made a lot of dumb mistakes.”
Fleming’s status is unknown for Friday’s game in Gary against West Side.
Marcus Robinson led Sterling with 92 yards on 11 carries.
