Carr drives offense past Ridgewood

Demetrius Carr was nervous heading into the season opener.
But the junior Immaculate Conception quarterback had nothing to be worried about.
He was virtually unstoppable as he threw two touchdowns and rushed for two more in the Knights’ 38-12 victory over Ridgewood Saturday afternoon in Elmhurst.
“I felt good out there,” Carr said. “The entire team played great.”
The first half was a teeter-totter. When the smoke cleared, Immaculate Conception had taken a 17-12 lead off Carr’s first rushing touchdown.
In the second half, Carr threw a 12-yard touchdown pass to senior tight end Andrew Vitek to end a drive that started at their own 37.
A few drives later, he led the Knights back into the red zone. As the pocket collapsed, he rolled to his right and found junior Tim Hipskind for another score.
Late in the game, he would run it in from five yards out for his third score of the half.
The quarterback racked up 238 total yards in the contest including 178 passing.
“I just take my reads, and if there’s pressure I step up in the pocket,” Carr said. “I’m not trying to score a touchdown every play, or make big plays. I just let it come naturally.”
Carr was also quick to emphasize that the victory was not a solo act, but a performance by an ensemble cast.
Receivers Cody Baker, a junior, and Pat Kirby, a senior, tallied 45 yards and 24 yards.
Ridgewood’s touchdowns came on a 63-yard run by P.J. O’Connor and a 15-yard connection between quarterback Joe Jacobsen, who threw for 54 yards in the game, and receiver Alex Wendel. Both scores came in the first half, and were followed by missed extra point attempts.
The Knights are coming off a 2010 season that saw them go 7-4 overall and 4-1 in their conference, the SCC Gold Division. They lost in the second round of the IHSA playoffs to Stillman Valley.
Now with their first win of 2011 under their belts, perhaps Carr will rest a little easier.
“This sets the tone for the rest of the season.”
