Maine South at Schaumburg

When: 7 p.m. Friday.

Outlook: Maine South coach Dave Inserra and offensive coordinator Charlie Bliss will go with two starting quarterbacks, Matt Alviti and Jimmy Frankos, to run an offense that lost running back and Sun-Times Player of the Year Matt Perez and quarterback Tyler Benz to graduation. Division I prospect Victor Nelson anchors the offensive line, and linebackers Luke Lenti and Marcus Nelli are defensive keys. The Saxons figure to be a handful with returning quarterback Mark Iannotti (6-4, 220) and running back Shepard Little, who missed last season.

Fremd at Lake Zurich

When: 7:30 p.m. Friday.

Outlook: No. 7 Lake Zurich returns running backs Jacob Brunlee (1,683 yards, 26 touchdowns) and Michael Shields and offensive linemen Mark Herman, Gus Coon, Mike Schnur and Steve Garcia from a 9-3 team that lost to Glenbard West in a Class 7A semifinal. Despite the graduation of OL Christian Lombard (Notre Dame), Fremd returns big-time prospects in Brian Bobek (Ohio State) and Jack Konopka (Northwestern). Also back from an 11-1 Class 8A quarterfinalist is quarterback Richard Concioldi.

Montini vs. Joliet Catholic

When: 7:30 p.m. Friday at Joliet Memorial Stadium.

Outlook: The teams that played for the Class 5A title in 2009 will open with a rematch. No. 16 Montini, which won 29-28 in November, returns an outstanding tandem of receivers in juniors Jordan Westerkamp and Anthony Taylor. Coach Chris Andriano's new quarterback will be Matt Westerkamp, Jordan's cousin. No. 6 Joliet Catholic is loaded with weapons on offense, including Illinois recruit Josh Ferguson and junior Malin Jones, who combined for more than 2,880 yards running last year.

WW South at Hinsdale Central

When: 7:30 p.m. Friday.

Outlook: Illinois recruit Reilly O'Toole returns at quarterback for Wheaton Warrenville South coach Ron Muhitch. The offensive line is anchored by Kansas-bound Luke Luhrsen and tight end Jason Schuman. Linebacker Jack Eshelman and nose guard Sparty Chino are two to watch. Quarterback remains a question for Hinsdale coach Mike DiMatteo, who looks to Dan Callahan to be the answer. The line is formidable with Michigan State recruit Jack Allen and Scott McDowell. Linebackers Jake Knowles, Pat Foley and Keith Hahn are returning.

Simeon vs. Mount Carmel

When: Noon Sunday at Soldier Field.

Outlook: New Simeon coach Dante Culbreath has a tough start to the schedule with the Caravan and Imagine Academy (St. Louis). Junior quarterback Robert Gregory will operate behind linemen Chris Bryant and Jordan Diamond and has threats in running back Horatio Banks and receivers Demarius Reed and Darius Scott. Mount Carmel has plenty of weapons with returning QB Chris Sujka and RB Michael Banks. Look for Zac Griffin, Eddie O'Connor and Nick Roach to be mainstays on the offensive line.

Morgan Park vs. Providence

When: 3:15 p.m. Sunday at Soldier Field.

Outlook: Junior Deshaun Hurley got experience at quarterback last year for Morgan Park and will operate behind a line anchored by center Matthew Porter. Coach Lexie Spurlock has a history of developing young teams ahead of schedule. For Providence, returning QB Joey Houlihan, who threw for 1,558 yards, OL Dan Lembke (6-7, 285), WRs Sean Carroll, Zach Hanlon and Sean Fitzgerald and TE Mitch Vejvoda lead the offense. Look for LB Ray Ames to make an impact on defense. The Celtics are at Joliet Catholic in Week 2.
