Dundee-Crown finishes off rival Jacobs

Dundee-Crown’s soccer team has had no trouble getting scoring opportunities this season. Putting it in the back of the net has been an entirely different matter.
On Thursday, the Chargers exhibited good timing by finding that missing element in their game against their rivals, Jacobs, and the end result was a 3-1 home-field victory in Fox Valley Valley play.
“We definitely could have capitalized on more of our chances,” said D-C senior forward Kyle Hagan. “It’s getting better. We had a lot of missed opportunities against (Crystal Lake) South last week.”
Hagan broke a 1-1 tie in the first half and added another score before halftime to put the Chargers (7-5 1-2) in complete command.
“Since I’ve been here with varsity as a sophomore, we’ve never been able to beat Jacobs. So that’s big for us,” Hagan said.
In fact, it was the Chargers’ first victory over Jacobs (8-8, 1-2) in four years.
Senior Adolfo Sandoval shot a pass from near midfield to Hagan, who had split the defense and got back for a breakaway and an easy goal with 21:08 left in the first half to break the tie.
“We got a good flow going and I happened to be in the right place at the right time and it ended up on my feet,” Hagan said.
Just 3:05 later, Sandoval launched a hard line-drive shot that goalie Nick Matysyk couldn’t hang onto, and the rebound came out to the right directly to Hagan, who had an open side of the net for the score.
“It’s been happening all season,” Chargers coach Rey Vargas said about getting breakaways and scoring opportunities. “It’s just that we can’t seem to find the back of the net. That’s been a big issue.
“To put three goals in in the first half just really gave us a big boost.”
Jacobs had come out fast, with Erik Nava scoring in the first five minutes. But Antony Meza knotted the score a couple minutes later for the Chargers.
“I thought we were playing real well and we just weren’t sharp enough in the final
third, and D-C had some nice counter attacks,” Jacobs coach A.J. Cappello said. “They put their chances in and we didn’t.
“We were caught a little flat in the back five and Hagan had a couple nice goals. Give them credit.”
Goalie Christian Martinez had very little to do in the second half for the Chargers, even with a strong wind at the Golden Eagles’ backs.
“I’m just glad we were able to play a complete game like this, and hold a team,” Vargas said. “Getting a good lead and holding that lead is a big boost to our team.”
