Everybody associated with Warren High School’s soccer program was happy on Wednesday.

The coach saw his team dominate, the huge crowd of fans saw a 4-0 thumping of visiting Mundelein.

And the players — well, the Warren players were ecstatic to be playing home games on the artificial-turf field at the school on O’Plaine Road.

Wednesday’s match was the team’s first on the carpet. An earlier home game had been played on the school’s old, grass pitch, and all other contests were road trips.

Senior captain Patrick Schulz spoke for his team this way:

“This surface is great. We had tons of fans come out. Everybody loves the turf. It’s really quick for us, which is good, because we’re a fast team. It feels good to finally play on it.”

Schulz said the setup is way better than it was on the other home field.

“There are a lot of bumps over at the other field,” said Schultz, who has verbally committed to play his college ball at Marquette.

“It’s easier to control the ball compared to our old grass field. We like to spread the ball out wide. We have great outside backs in Timmy (Pieper) and Billy (Eddy), and Brady (goalie Brady Walsh) is just amazing. He saves everything that comes to him.”

Junior center-mid Daniel Sczcepanek, who had two goals in the match, is also excited about the team’s new home.

“We were really looking forward to it. It was nice to see all the fans come out. We wanted to make a good impression,” he said.

That they did, scoring four goals in the first half to end the competitive phase of the game early. Sean Kirwan and Aunor Solis also tallied.

Devils coach Jason Ahonen also liked the new setup.

“The biggest thing is just getting a feel for the width. It’s narrower than our other field,” the coach said. “The nice thing is, when we get a lot of fans here and they’re right on top of the action, that can really work to our advantage.”

Kind of like it did on Wednesday.
