Sandburg has no problem with Providence

Working quickly and efficiently across the turf, Sandburg strung together four goals in the opening 20 minutes Wednesday to take control against visiting Providence.

Sandburg opened the second half with just three starters in the lineup and the Eagles went on to a 7-0 victory as Danny Lojek and Zack Biel each scored twice in the Eagles’ opener of the Lincoln-Way Tournament.

“We’ve got a lot of good talent,’’ Biel said. “We share the ball around and no one is really selfish on the team, so that really helps for scoring. No one really cares about their stats.’’

Lojek scored the opener on a penalty kick seven minutes into the game. Przemek Tylka made it 2-0 two minutes later before Biel scored back-to-back goals, the second one on a nice crossing pass from Taylor Popovich.

“We were moving the ball to the weak side very quickly,’’ Sandburg coach Desi Vuillaume said of the first 20 minutes. “We’ve been working on it in practice the last few weeks. It’s nice to see them actually accomplish that.’’

Christian Sorpassa and Popovich also scored for Sandburg (3-2-2), which faces Shepard on Thursday in the Eagles’ second game of the tournament.

“We’re definitely working better on the shape of our offense,’’ Biel said. “Our chemistry is getting better and better as the season goes on. I think we’re coming together as a team.’’

“We probably played the hardest team we’re going to play all year the other night against Naperville North in the Best of the West championship game,’’ Vuillaume said. “We lost 2-0, but held them scoreless until 15 minutes left in the game.’’

Meanwhile, Providence (0-7) plays Lincoln-Way West on Thursday in the Lincoln-Way Tournament.

“We’re struggling right now,’’ Providence coach Dan Potempa said. “We’ve got the talent. We’re just struggling to put it all together, trying to find positions for people, trying to get them to work together as a team.’’

Although Providence is winless, Potempa praised the overall effort of sophomore Ben Salvador.

“He’s really stepped up,’’ Potempa said. “He’s our shining star right now. Every opportunity we get is somehow created from Ben.’’
