Waubonsie falls to Fremd

Despite both teams having a difficulty retaining possession of the ball, Fremd took down Waubonsie Valley 3-0 Thursday night at the Best of the West Tournament.
Fremd sophomore Brock VonHolt scored from 20 yards out 24 minutes into the game and senior Brian Hindle scored off a nifty set piece three minutes before half.
“I thought the energy was there,” Fremd coach Steve Keller said. “We looked focused. We looked like we wanted to get out here and play. We played hard and hustled and I think that lends itself to getting some good bounces and luck.”
Fremd junior Ryota Wada added the Vikings’ third goal just five minutes into the second half, scoring on a long run and a nice one-on-one kick over oncoming Waubonsie keeper Jordan Ward.
“I thought the second goal took the wind out of the sails,” said Warriors coach Angelo DiBernardo, whose team has now been shutout two straight games while giving up seven goals. “We didn’t play well. We didn’t put three passes together. We were outworked. They score a couple goals and confidence goes up, our confidence goes down. It’s a combination of things.”
No play in the game may have been prettier than the Fremd (3-1) set piece from 21 yards out at the top of the box, following what DiBernardo called a questionable foul call.
The Vikings’ Jeremy Kosacz tapped the ball to Nick Tambellini who placed the ball into an angle where Hindle could drive the ball low and past the Waubonsie wall into goal.
“It was actually something we got off the Manchester United game this weekend,” Hindle said. “It a simple roll, stop and hit. The angle opens up with the roll to give an angle to get past the wall.”
The Warriors (1-2) put four shots on frame, but could not muster any solid scoring chances with their disconnected teamwork.
“We have to learn than when things don’t go well,” you have to work hard, you have to work through it,” DiBernardo said. “You have to try to play soccer the way it’s supposed to be played and not get desperate.
