Carmel finishes third in North Shore Shootout

Sprinting down the sideline with the ball at his feet and his head on a swivel, Carmel’s Peter Kolb scanned the field and surveyed the passing lanes.
With perfect timing and execution, the junior midfielder — and captain of the boys soccer team — effortlessly lofted a cross into the box. Knifing his way through the defense to gain inside position, teammate Max Heinrich attacked the ball in the air, and pounded it into the back of the net for a goal.
The first-half goal against Lakes High School in the Lake Forest North Shore Shootout Saturday afternoon proved to be enough for a 1-0 win — and a third-place finish in the tournament.
“Peter made a nice run, and served up a great ball,” said Carmel head coach John Halloran. “He was huge for us throughout the tournament. He did a really good job of staying active, distributing out of the back, and being the vocal leader we needed him to be.”
Carmel also defeated Waukegan 6-1 on Aug. 23. Scoring goals in the win were Kolb, Heinrich, Christian Avalos, Shea Ronayne, Todd Holup and Billy Kloss.
Two days later, Carmel took on Deerfield with a chance to earn a spot in the tourney title game, but fell short in a 1-0 loss.
“We have to get better at converting possession into goals,” Halloran said. “We controlled the possession for the majority of the game, but just couldn’t find a way to score. Even (on Saturday), we only put in one goal, despite the possession and shots on net.”
With the season just getting underway, the Corsairs will have plenty of opportunities to improve, but Halloran is quite pleased with what he’s seen from his team overall.
“I’m really happy, especially in terms of the play from the seniors,” Halloran said. “We have a lot of seniors that were on the team last season but didn’t get much playing time. They’ve come in, worked hard, and have played really well.”
Carmel will visit Glenbrook North at 6 p.m. today, and return home to host Niles North at 10 a.m. Saturday.
