Boys Basketball: Short-handed Glenbrook North cruises past Loyola

Nothing seems to shake Glenbrook North.
Once again, the Spartans played shorthanded and still found a way to get a win, beating Loyola 59-41 on Saturday in Northbrook.
For the second time this week, the Spartans played without two starters. In Tuesday’s 58-51 win over rival Glenbrook South, point guard Kurt Karis joined Andrew McAuliffe, out since early December with fractured patella, on the sideline. On Saturday, it was Mitchell Lev keeping McAuliffe company on the bench.
“Whenever we get everybody back, we are going to be stronger than ever,” said senior Adam Chick, who scored 17 on Saturday as the Spartans improved to 11-3 overall. “We know the potential we have on this team. We can go far in the playoffs, and we are anxious to find out what we can do.”
Glenbrook North raced out to a 16-0 lead over the Ramblers and never trailed. Loyola made a push early in the second half to cut the deficit to 11, but the Spartans scored back-to-back baskets to end the third quarter ahead 48-29.
Glenbrook North led by as many as 23 in the fourth. Freshman Jan Siegien scored 11 of his 13 in the second half. Trevor Ponticelli added 10 points in the win.
Loyola lost for the second time in two nights and fell to 6-9 on the season. The Ramblers couldn’t establish any rhythm on offense and struggled to slow down the Spartans on the other end.
Peter Pujals scored 12 points, and Richie Wehman contributed eight points. Jack Morrissey made two three-pointers in the first quarter and ended up with six points in the game.
“When someone’s number is called, they step up,” Chick said. “It’s been good.”
McAuliffe, the 6-foot-8 junior forward who’s missed eight games, is expected back at practice Jan. 16, according to Dave Weber. But the Glenbrook North coach doesn’t know how effective McAuliffe will be once he returns to action.
Meanwhile, Weber is happy with how the Spartans are dealing with all the misfortune.
“I’m really proud of this team,” he said.
