Senior guard David Cohn scored a career-high 31 points to lead York to a 53-44 upset of visiting Glenbard West in a West Suburban Silver clash.

“I thought we did a great job of sticking to our game plan,” York coach and former DePaul star Tom Kleinschmidt said. “We decided that we had to control tempo in some of these games. We put in a new zone. We hit some big shots. Glenbard West is a helluva team. They are loaded. We stepped up and met the challenge.“

Cohn, who shot 11-for-15 from the floor, previously had a career high of 29 points.

“I’m ecstatic,” said Cohn. “It’s the biggest win we had so far. Coach Kleinschmidt did the greatest job. We stuck to our game plan and we won.”

York (7-7, 2-3) went on a 8-0 run to open the second quarter fueled by two three pointers and a layup from Cohn and took a 25-21 lead into the locker room at halftime. Cohn had 18 of York’s 25 points at intermission.

Glenbard West (10-2, 2-1) rallied in the third quarter by outscoring York 12-7 to take a 33-32 lead.

York opened the fourth quarter on a 10-0 run and never trailed again.

“Before the game I told them they were a better 6 and 7 team than when they were a 3 and 1 team,” said Kleinschmidt. “I meant that. I believed that. They may have looked at me crazy. We’re seasoned now.”

“That was a great win for us,” Cohn said. “Our goal was to hold them under 50 points. We did that and we won.”

After starting out the season 10-0. Glenbard West has now dropped two straight. Junior guard Jeff Levesque led the way for the Hilltopppers with 13 points. Senior forward Michael Mache, who fouled out with 3.2 seconds left in the game, scored 11 points.
