Thomas Durrett scored 15 points Evan Boudreaux added 10 points and 14 rebounds as Lake Forest upset Stevenson Friday, 53-45, in North Suburban Conference Lake Division action.
The Scouts (6-7 overall, 1-3 NSC Lake) held the Patriots to just two points – and without a field goal – during the game’s final four minutes, thanks to a 12-2 run to close things out.
The game was tied, 43-43, until Lake Forest junior guard George Quall buried a wide open three-pointer with 1:43 to play. It was his only field goal of the second half, giving the Scouts the lead for good. Quall (five points) entered the game moments earlier to replace starting guard Carter Bass, who suffered a bloody nose.
“That was a huge three for us,” Lake Forest coach Phil LaScala said. “It’s been a long time coming. We finally got over the hump tonight after playing in a lot of close games. We’ve been working on situations just like this in practice, and it finally paid off.”
It was Lake Forest’s first conference win of the season, and the victory also knocked Stevenson (10-3, 3-1) out of sole possession of first place in the NSC Lake.
Eight of Boudreaux’s points and five of his rebounds came in the fourth quarter, including a putback layup with 2:37 remaining that tied the game, 43-43. The Scouts’ bench also contributed 22 points Friday.
“This is an amazing feeling right now,” Boudreaux said. “Knocking off a team like Stevenson, on their floor, is a huge deal to us. It’s a great way to start off the year.”
Stevenson coach Pat Ambrose felt the little things made the difference down the stretch.
“We kind of fell apart there at the end, but give Lake Forest credit,” Ambrose said. “They beat us to every 50/50 ball late, made their shots, and we just couldn’t finish on our home court, which you’d expect us to do.”
“We didn’t get the defensive stops we needed down the stretch and could have done a better job holding on to our lead. But we have to go get ready for Lake Zurich (on Saturday night) now.”
Michael Fleming had a game-high 17 points for the Patriots.
