Marvie Keith never met a shot that he was afraid to take, including those from the foul line.
The Crete-Monee point guard made two free throws when just about everyone else was missing theirs as the Warriors upset No. 4 Seton 67-66 in overtime to reach the championship game of the McDipper Tournament at Rich South.
``This my third year starting on the varsity so I know what I’m doing out there,’’ Keith said. ``We worked on free throws all day in practice yesterday and it paid off tonight.’’
Keith’s pair of free throws put Crete ahead for good at 67-65 with 35 seconds left. Teammate Maurice Hopkins also made a pair to tie the game at 65 just prior to Keith’s. The rest of the overtime saw other members of both teams shoot just 1-for-10 from the line.
Russell Robinson Jr. had a chance to win the game with two seconds remaining but missed both of his free throws for Seton.
``We handled them pretty well for most of the game,’’ Crete coach Tom Cappel said.``I think we got a little pooped and tentative at the end.’’
The Warriors broke open a close game in the second quarter and took its biggest lead 37-26 with two minutes left in the first half. Mark Conner drained a three to give the Warriors (10-2) that lead. For the second consecutive game, Conner came off the bench to give Crete a boost, leading the Warriors with 19 points.
``He always practices real hard,’’ Keith said of Conner. ``He is one of the hardest working guys on this team.’’
Seton (13-1) could never get its up-tempo game going. The Sting was just 3-for-25 from three point-land but still managed to work its way back into the game in the fourth quarter.
Seton trailed 60-51 with just under three minutes remaining before making its run. Kamal Shasi tied the game at 63 with 22 seconds remaining on a putback layup. His basket capped a 12-3 run that saw the Sting get three rebound baskets.
J.R. Tolliver led Seton with 23 points and 14 rebounds. Robinson chipped in with 12 points and Mark Weems Jr added 11 for Seton.
Keith had 15 points and LaQuon Treadwell pulled down 15 rebounds for Crete.
