A battle between two of the South Side’s best guards was overshadowed by the defense of Bloom’s Dejahown Freeman.

The 6-2 junior was in the grill of Tyler Ulis the entire game and helped lead his team to a 56-47 victory over Marian Catholic at the McDipper tournament.

No. 6 Bloom (11-0) broke open a tie game in the fourth quarter while Freeman helped hold Ulis scoreless until just over three minutes were left to play.

``I give my team all the credit because they were helping me out telling me which way to stick him,’’ Freeman said. ``I guard Donald (Moore) during practice and that really helped me with guarding Ulis tonight.’’

The game was tied at 33 at the end of the third quarter, but Bloom took control in the opening minutes of the fourth. Lejavius Johnson hit a three from the top of the key with seven minutes left to break the tie for good at 36-33.

The Blazing Trojans followed that up with seven more points from Moore, Henry Hicks and Johnny Griffin to take a 43-33 lead.

``Johnson, Moore and Hicks are our senior leaders,’’ Bloom coach Jasper Williams said. ``They really got it started for us in the fourth.’’

Ulis is just a sophomore at point guard, but he is a vital element in Marian’s offense. He finally got on the board with a pair of free throws at the 3:21 mark of the fourth quarter and finished with nine points.

Keeping Marian (6-4) in the game were Erik Crittendon and Joshua Cohn, who each scored 10 points.

Moore, who was guarded by Ulis, finished with 11 points. Johnson led Bloom with 16 points while Hicks and Griffin both scored 10.

``Marian slowed the tempo of the game down,’’ Moore said. ``We just turned our defense into offense in the last quarter.’’
