Jacobs got off to a fast start against Elk Grove on Monday afternoon in the second round of pool play in the Jacobs Holiday Classic. Unfortunately for Jacobs, they it cold in the second quarter and Elk Grove went on to a convincing 62-50 victory.

Jacobs (1-6) started quickly and held a 14-7 lead after the first quarter. Elk Grove (4-6) was prepared for this and once the second quarter started the rest of the game was all Grenadiers.

“We knew Jacobs would be fired up at their own tournament and get off to a quick start,” said Elk Grove coach Anthony Furman. “I told the team if we could survive the opening quarter we would be in good shape.”

Although the Grenadiers did trail after the first quarter, they completely dominated Jacobs in the second quarter. Elk Grove outscored Jacobs 23-5 to go up 30-19 at halftime and never looked back.

“I thought we would be able to get some open looks and luckily they started going in,” said Furman. “Our defense was able to stop them and we seemed to contest almost every shot.”

Jacobs coach Jim Hinkle was happy with his team’s effort even in defeat.

“We had a nice start, but then a terrible second quarter,” said Hinkle. “It was tough to match their intensity, and Elk Grove simply outplayed us. It was that simple.”

Zachary Solorio and Kishan Patel each scored 13 points for Elk Grove on Monday.

“We seem to start off every game a little slow,” said Patel. “We always seem to respond like we did in this game. Coach (Furman) told us to stay calm. We did and started to get some great looks and the shots started to fall in.”

Jacobs was led by Alex Glover who scored 15 points while Will Schwerdtmann added 12 points for the Golden Eagles.

Jacobs and Elk Grove will conclude pool play on Tuesday. Elk Grove will face Rockford Jefferson while Jacobs will take on Barrington.
