After coming off a nice conference win against Waukegan, New Trier showed no signs of a let down as it pounded Prosser 48-32 in Winnetka on Saturday.
The No. 15 Trevians (9-1) set the tone early and never let up. A hard-nose, relentless Trevian defense forced 13 turnovers and allowed only 14 points in the first half.
“Coach (Scott Fricke) talked about coming back from a win and not playing tired. He wanted us to come out and play hard on defense, end the game the early,” said New Trier senior forward Austin Angel, who led all scorers with 17 points.
Angel burned the Falcons (5-3) from the inside and outside. He scored two baskets in the paint in the first period and threw down an alley-oop dunk in the second period. Then he showed off his three-point range, hitting from beyond the arc with 4:38 left in the first half to give the Trevians a 15-8 lead.
“We talked about moving the ball well, making good passes and finding the open man. Our team executed well, I just needed to shoot,” said Angel.
On the final possession of the first half, it wasn’t a surprise that New Trier found Angel on the right wing for a buzzer-beating three that gave the Trevians a commanding 23-14 lead.
Reid Berman, who scored eight of his 10 points in the first half, also did damage from long distance, connecting on two threes.
New Trier put the game away thanks to a 10-0 run to start the third period. Steven Cook (five points) sparked the run with a three. Berman then hit a baseline jumper in transition after a Connor Boehm (16 points, six rebounds) steal. On the Trevians’ next possession, Angel Buried a three from the right corner. Boehm then stole another pass, took it the length of the court and scored. He finished with 11 second-half points.
“We came out in the second half just hitting our shots. Then we turned up our defensive pressure and before we knew it, we had a 10-0 run,” said Boehm.
Prosser only scored six points in the period and turned the ball over seven more times.
Gregorio Caballero led the Falcons with eight points and five rebounds.
