For the first half, De La Salle center Gavin Schilling was not much of a factor. He was hampered by two quick fouls and was held to five points. But the 6-9 junior came to play on the second half, scoring 14 to lead De La Salle to 73-60 win over visiting hales Friday evening in a Catholic League North showdown.

“It was tough sitting when I picked up the second foul,” said Schilling, who finished with 19. “But the second half, we started playing better defense and I got a couple dunks to turn the momentum.”

For the evening, Schilling recorded seven dunks and 10 rebounds. Junior Alex Foster picked up a double-double of his own with 20 points, 11 rebounds and three blocks.

“In the first half, we didn’t have the intensity,” said Foster. In the second half, we played much better defense and we stopped turning the ball over.”

The Meteors (7-1, 2-1) trailed 38-36 early in the third quarter, but Schilling scored six and Alvin Ellis (19 points) scored five to lead a 15-2 run, giving De La Salle a 51-40 lead with 2:30 remaining in the third quarter. The Spartans (3-4, 1-2) closed to within five, 51-46, but Marcus White hit a three-pointer to gave the Meteors a 54-46 lead at the end of the third.

De La Salle kept Hales at bay, converting nine free throws in the fourth quarter. The Spartans never got closer than eight. Shaquon Alexander led Hales with 18 points, while Eddie Alcantera added 14.
