A tough early-season schedule that included losses to three teams in the Top 20 seems to be paying dividends for No. 20 Farragut. The Admirals gained an early edge behind Rashaun Stimage and maintained its distance from a young Westinghouse team in a 67-52 Red-West victory Friday night.
Farragut has lost games to Simeon, De La Salle and Harlan in the early going but the work against the tough competition has paid off with consecutive wins in the Red-West.
“Playing those teams can’t help but make us better down the road,” Farragut coach William Nelson said. “We have only one starter [Stimage] back from last year so this is a learning experience for these other guys.”
Farragut (5-3, 2-0) was able to break away in the first quarter. The Admirals turned a tied game into a 17-6 lead with just under two minutes left in the first quarter. Eleven unanswered points were keyed by Stimage, John Carter and Lavell Boyd who all contribute through defense, assists and scoring.
Stimage scored a pair of baskets and added an assist and two steals. Carter scored seven points and added a steal while Boyd had two steals and two assists as the Warriors (7-3, 1-1) struggled to get the ball past half court during the run.
“We wanted to come out as tough as we could and we did tonight,” Stimage said. “We played tough teams and it helped us eliminate mistakes as we went on.”
Stimage kept the pressure on throughout the first half making five of his six shots. The 6-7, senior helped stake the Admirals out to a 36-19 halftime lead. Westinghouse could never seriously threaten that lead. Stimage finished with 20 points and nine rebounds.
Westinghouse started five underclassmen and seemed to settle down in the second half as they did not allow Farragut to run away. Junior Dewan White scored 15 of his 19 points in the second half for the Warriors.
Boyd finished with 14 points and Carter finished with 12.
