Boys Basketball: Delvon Rencher’s effort enough as Homewood-Flossmoor downs Lockport

Delvon Rencher wasn’t going to let Homewood-Flossmoor lose.
The senior forward scored a game-high 26 points, including hitting the tying three-pointer with seven seconds left in regulation, as H-F survived a scare and came away with a 49-43 overtime victory over Lockport Friday night in an early season SouthWest Suburban Blue clash at Lockport East.
“I told the team we’re not going to lose,” Rencher said. “I was going to do whatever it takes to win.”
Lockport (3-3, 0-3) had rallied in the final minute of regulation and went ahead 41-38 on an inside basket by Kyle Ward with 45 seconds left and a pair of free throws by sophomore John Campbell with 20.1 seconds remaining.
But H-F (6-1, 2-0) worked the ball to Rencher on the right wing and he drained the shot to tie the game.
“In the huddle beforehand I told the team to give it to me,” he said. “Tyrone Sherman got me the ball and I knew it was in the whole time. It’s a team game and anyone can step up, but it was my turn to step up to the plate.”
Courtney Cole, who led Lockport with 14 points, air-balled a three-point attempt at the buzzer and the game went to overtime. Tim Williams (six points, six rebounds) scored on a layup to open the OT and the Vikings took the lead for good. Sherman, who had nine points, clinched it by going 6 of 6 from the line in the extra session.
The Porters jumped out to a 16-9 lead after one quarter and led 20-11 midway through the second period. H-F then went on a 10-0 run and led 23-22 at half.
The second half featured five ties and three lead changes. Rencher scored all nine of the Vikings points in the third quarter, helping them to a 32-27 advantage, before they settled on a 32-29 lead after three.
Campbell had 12 points and five rebounds, Dexter Taylor added six points and Ward finished with five points and seven rebounds for Lockport.
“Delvon hit a monster shot, but we were flat,” H-F coach Jim McLaughlin said. “But give Lockport credit, they outworked us and they deserved to win the game.”
