Boys Basketball: Schaumburg defense too tough for Hoffman Estates

Updated: December 8, 2011 9:13PM

Christian Spandiary and Schaumburg put the clamps on host Hoffman Estates Thursday in a 57-40 win.

“We had a definite height advantage,” said Spandiary, who led the Saxons with 20 points. “We were able to get the ball into the post and I was able to make some shots.”

Schaumburg (6-2, 2-0) forced Hoffman Estates, which was playing its first home game of the year, to get off to a slow start.

Thanks to a stout defensive effort by the Saxons, Hoffman Estates (3-4, 0-2) didn’t score until there were 24 seconds left in the first quarter. Schaumburg, which forced seven turnovers and eight missed shots, ran off 13 straight points.

“We did get off to a good start and that certainly helped,” Schaumburg coach Matt Walsh said. “We played well at times. We just need to be more consistent.”

Austin Terry (24 points) finally got the Hawks in gear as Hoffman Estates closed to within six on two different occasions in the second quarter. But Spandiary nailed two key baskets including a trey to make sure that was as close as Hoffman Estates would get as Schaumburg cruised to a 30-18 lead at the half and was never challenged from there.

“When we are sharing the ball,” Walsh said. “And move ball around and find the open man, we are playing well.”

Joe Faleni had 10 points Michael Mallet added nine points for Schaumburg
