Boys Basketball: Dijon Ross’ three enough as Waukegan tops Glenbrook South

Updated: December 6, 2011 9:57PM

Senior guard Dijon Ross hit a three-pointer from the corner with 3.8 seconds left to give visiting Waukegan a 52-49 victory over host Glenbrook South on Tuesday in a Central Suburban League South Division matchup.

The Titans (2-5) had tied the game at 49-49 with 1:25 left on a 15-foot jumper by Justin Busiel.

Waukegan (2-3) then held for the final shot, and Glenbrook South trapped Bulldog point guard Jordan Johnson near halfcourt.

He whipped a pass to Ross in the corner and the senior buried the wide-open trey.

“When I got the open look, I was confident I was going to hit it,” said Ross, who came off the bench had six points on two three-pointers.

“This gives us a lot of momentum going into our next game at Evanston (on Friday night).”

Bulldog coach Ron Ashlaw said that while the final play wasn’t designed specifically for Ross, “We have a lot of confidence in his shooting ability.”

Waukegan’s standout on Tuesday was junior forward Devonte Taylor. He had a game-high 22 points and grabbed nine rebounds.

Meanwhile, Glenbrook South got 15 points from Jamie Nikitas and 12 from Victor Levi.

“The game started very well for us. If we continue to play like this, we’ll be hard to beat,” said Titans coach Scott Nemecek.

In the first half, Glenbrook South had 13 offensive rebounds in building a 30-26 lead.

Waukegan scored the first eight points of the third quarter and Glenbrook South didn’t lead the rest of the way. The Titans did force three ties in the second half.

In the fourth quarter, Waukegan hit all four of its field-goal attempts, including Ross’ game-winner.

The Bulldogs were 10 of 18 shooting after the break after a 10 of 26 showing in the first two quarters.

Glenbrook South was 19 of 52 shooting in the game.

“We didn’t let either of their two best players (Taylor and Akeem Springs, who had 11 points) beat us at the end of the game,” said Nemecek. “That’s a credit to us and a credit to them.”

Glenbrook South will play at New Trier on Thursday in another league contest.
