Boys Basketball: Brandon Larkin-Guilfoyle scores 30 in Streamwood win over McHenry

Two very evenly matched teams hit the floor in a great nonconference game Thursday night at Streamwood. The host Sabres held on to defeat the McHenry Warriors 60-54.

McHenry (1-3) got off to a quick start in a game that featured scoring spurts all night by both squads. The Warriors took a quick 8-0 lead before the Sabres (2-3) even had a good look at the basket. That is when Streamwood guard Brandon Larkin-Guilfoyle scored six quick points and the game would be a back-and-forth encounter until the final horn sounded. Larkin-Guilfoyle led the Sabres with 30 points while shooting 52 percent from the field. The Streamwood senior also added 10 rebounds.

“I started hitting shots in the second quarter and it really carried over for me into the third quarter as well,” said Larkin-Guilfoyle. “I began to gain a lot of confidence in my shot and they just kept going in.”

The key to the victory for Streamwood was at the foul line where it shot 76 percent as a team compared to just 57 percent for McHenry.

“If you look at the three games we lost, we shot terrible from the line in all of those games,” said Sabres coach Tim Jones. “Tonight we were outstanding from the free throw line and we won a close game against a good McHenry team.”

The Warriors were led by Robert Tonyan, who scored 17 points and added 18 rebounds. Jasper Taylor added 15 points for McHenry.

“We got off to a great start and we seemed to feed off each other,” said Tonyan. “Unfortunately we missed a lot of foul shots and that is what hurt us in the end.”

Streamwood doesn’t get much time to celebrate as the Sabres begin Upstate Eight play Friday at St. Charles East.

“Tonight was a great win for us. I can’t ever remember us beating McHenry,” said Jones. “We have a quick turnaround and play a tough team tomorrow (St. Charles East on Friday). We have a lot of guys that can score, they just need to gain confidence. We have some guys who are out with injuries so we need the whole team to step up as we begin conference play.”
