Boys Basketball: North Chicago guard play overpowers Lake Forest Academy

A 48-point performance by Lake Forest Academy’s Kori Babineaux’s created a major buzz in Waukegan’s gym on Saturday.
But the biggest smile in the Dog Pound belonged to North Chicago coach Gerald Coleman, who saw his team pull away late to earn a 75-67 win to finish 2-1 in the Waukegan tournament.
Babineaux, a 6-foot-6 senior who joined LFA this year (he’s from California) hit 16-of-22 from the field, 5-of-7 from behind the arc, and was 11-of-13 from the free-throw line. He also had five steals before fouling out with 1:03 to go.
“We accomplished what we wanted to accomplish,” said Warhawks coach Gerald Coleman. “But I’d still like us to play more as one team. We’re still separating into groups.”
For the winners, Aaron Simpson had 18 points (7-for-16 from the field), despite picking up three fouls before he scored a point.
Kevonte Curry added 15 points, Kurt Hall had 12, and Marzhon Bryant had all 10 of his points in the fourth quarter.
North Chicago used a 9-0 run over a 1:43 stretch in the fourth quarter to go from 62-58 down to 67-62 ahead.
“I told our guys before the game we’ve played very hard for two games, but we can’t come out slow,” said Coleman. “This was a test for us. Unfortunately, they had to get chewed out to respond.”
