Jordan Wiegold hit a 15-foot jumper at the buzzer to give host Mundelein a 61-59 victory over Barrington in Round 3 of the Mustangs’ six-team, round-robin tournament.
Barrington (2-1) tied the game at 59-59 with 20 seconds on a layup by Mark Bennett.
After a timeout, Mundelein star Robert Knar (game-high 22 points on 8 of 16 shooting) drove to the baseline, but was double-teamed. He kicked it out to Wiegold, who delivered for the Mustangs (3-0).
“We ran a set play at the end of the game,” said Mustang coach Richard Knar. “We are a young team and this was a great win early in the season.
“We need to continue to communicate and improve on the defensive end. We have to learn to get stops and extend the lead.
Wiegold finished with 10 points. Last February, he hit the game-winner the buzzer against North Chicago.
Barrington was led by Brad Zaumseil with 18 points. Bennett added 16 and Jackson Wegner had 12.
Mundelein led 33-31 at halftime and the biggest lead for the Mustangs was six points early in the fourth quarter.
On Saturday night, Mundelein will face Lakes (2-1) in what is shaping up to be the championship game of the tournament.
