Boys Basketball: Libertyville tough vs Antioch

Libertyville improved to 2-0 in the Maine West holiday tournament by knocking off Antioch 61-51 Wednesday in a game played at Maine South.
Antioch is now 0-3 in the five-team, round-robin event.
Ellis Mathews scored 24 points and Luke Mathewson added 11 for the Wildcats, who overcame a 7-0 deficit after the first four minutes.
The game was tied 17-17 after one period, and Libertyville took the lead for good in the second period, building a 38-24 halftime lead.
Antioch didn’t get closer than the final score down the stretch.
“Our defense got us the lead and I was pleased with our offensive effort,” said Libertyville coach Scott Bogumil. “The game got a little sloppy in the fourth quarter, but we had a big enough lead to win the game.”
Mathews had 19 points in the first half, including 12 in the first quarter.
The 6-5 senior added a half-dozen rebounds.
Libertyville has one of the area’s taller front lines. Besides Mathews, Mathewson also is 6-5 and Jack Deichl is also 6-5. Deichl is the quarterback of the Cats’ football team.
Against that size, Antioch struggled.
Emery Paramski led the Sequoits with 18 points, including four 3-point bombs.
Karl Nettgen, the team’s 6-5 center, added 10 points and seven boards.
“We just can’t play 32 minutes,” said first-year Antioch coach Jim White. “We have good minutes, but then we have lulls where we shoot ourselves in the foot.”
Antioch committed 25 turnovers in the game and shot 16-of-40 from the field.
Libertyville was 25 of 55 from the field, and that included an 0-for-8 fourth quarter in which the Cats were 6-of-8 from the line to hold on for the victory.
