Boys Basketball: Late basket boosts Bartlett by Streamwood

He hadn’t taken many or hit any shots prior to the one he launched with 10 seconds left of a tied game, but Bartlett junior John Moss buried the shot of the night on Wednesday against Streamwood.
Moss’ 17-footer found the twine to effectively give the Hawks a 37-35 win over the Sabres in third-day action of this year’s Wheaton Academy Thanksgiving Tournament.
The Hawks (2-0) ran their offense for almost all of the game’s final minute before Moss received a pass at the top of the key from Matt Chaltin.
And with the game on his shoulders, Moss was as calm as can be in taking the game-winning shot.
“Coach talks about tempo and he just wanted us to run the offense and get a good shot,” Moss said. “I was behind the (three-point) stripe when I got it, took a step, and just shot it.”
The Hawks’ Joe Sabatino capped a cold-shooting first quarter for both teams with a putback at the buzzer to give the Hawks a 7-5 lead. Streamwood’s Brandon Larkin-Guilfoyle netted seven points in the second quarter while Chaltin scored eight as Bartlett grabbed a 23-18 halftime lead.
Another offensive struggle played out in the third quarter, with the Sabres (1-2) outscoring the Hawks 4-3 in the period but trailing 26-22 heading into the final eight minutes.
Bartlett’s Marcus Aluquin hit a pair of free throws and Streamwood’s Joel Lightbourne hit a baseline jumper to tie the game at 35, before Moss’ game-winner. Streamwood’s Dalton Lundeen’s 3-pointer at the buzzer hit the back of the rim and bounced away.
Chaltin muscled his way to a game-high 15 points, followed by Aluquin with seven and Sabatino with six points on the night.
Larkin-Guilfoyle led Streamwood with 13 points, followed by Lundeen with eight and Lightbourne and Vince Williams with six apiece.
It was anything but an offensive barnburner, but the Hawks were happy to take it.
“For whatever reason, we didn’t shoot well tonight,” Bartlett coach Jim Wolfsmith said. “Streamwood played some good defense on us, had hands up, but we missed plenty of good looks early in the game. If we hit those shots, we gain separation. But then the further we got into the game, the more Streamwood realized they were in this game.
“It’s a win but we need to play better to be the kind of team we want to be.”
