Boys Basketball: Huntley escapses from Hampshire
Updated: November 23, 2011 8:36PM
Hampshire gave Huntley everything it could handle Wednesday, but the Red Raiders escaped with a 54-49 victory at the Sycamore Thanksgiving Tournament.
The Whip-Purs trailed by 10 at halftime and found themselves in a 39-26 hole late in the third quarter before roaring back. A 3-pointer from Brock Ralphs and a basket by Brendan Waterworth pulled Hampshire even at 46 with 3:36 to play, but the Whips went without a field goal the rest of the way.
Hampshire (0-2) had plenty of opportunities down the stretch, but a pair of turnovers while trailing by three points in the final 70 seconds proved to be its undoing.
Justin Frederick sank a pair of free throws for Huntley (2-0) to seal the win and finished with a team-high 12 points.
“We were fortunate to pull it out,” said Huntley coach Marty Manning, who notched his 100th career victory with the triumph. “I think it’s because we had the first-half lead, but they definitely outplayed us in the second half. There’s no question they were the better team for those 16 minutes.”
Troy Miller and Amazne Egekeze added 11 points apiece for Huntley, and the Raiders got 10 points and six rebounds from Bryce Only.
Hamsphire’s Brock Ralphs had a game-high 18 points for the Whips, who trailed 28-18 at halftime and suffered its second loss by five points or fewer. Tyler Watzlawick scored all 10 of his points in the second half and added seven rebounds for Hampshire “We had trouble getting going, and I don’t know what it is,” Hampshire coach Bob Barnett said. “It’s something we’ve got to figure out.”
Dundee-Crown 63, Power House 38:
The Chargers looked downright dominant at times while putting together their second solid performance in as many nights at the Sycamore Tournament.
D-C (2-0) broke open a close game by scoring the first eight points of the second quarter to take an 18-9 lead. The Chargers then scored the first nine points of the third quarter to open a 15-point lead and used a 16-0 run in the fourth quarter to put the game away.
“We got on a roll there for a while and I didn’t think they were going to stop us,” D-C junior Dylan Kissack said. “We were playing great defense, and that’s where our runs start when we get stops on defense.”
Kissack tallied a career-high 21 points to go with six rebounds. Thomas McNally also provided a spark with 11 points and six rebounds.
D-C shot a blistering 27-for-46 (58.7 percent) from the field. Other key contributors for the Chargers were Brandon Rodriguez (9 points) and Brandon Gordon (7 points).
Joel Simmons led Power Hosue (0-2) with 11 points.
