Boys Basketball: Oswego pulls away from Marmion

“We did what we set out to do,” said a pleased Kevin Schnable.
And that was?
“(Apply) Pressure, pressure and more pressure. Fly around and make it happen,” said the hobbling Oswego basketball coach.
Schnable’s right foot is in a boot and he’s on crutches after rupturing his right Achilles tendon in a coaches’ pickup basketball game in September.
The host Panthers’ mobility was anything but limited as they forced 10 first-quarter turnovers by Marmion Academy, opened the game with an 11-0 run and never looked back on the way to an 80-50 victory Tuesday in their Hoops for Healing Tournament.
“When you put 80 on the board, you can’t complain too much,” said Schnable, who hadn’t had time to read his team’s stat sheet.
“My hope is that we were balanced (in scoring). We put an emphasis on team play. It’s a situation where I’m never satisfied. I’m a big fan of the next pass. That’s probably because I had so much trouble as a player putting the ball in the basket.”
The 2-0 Panthers had four players score in double figures. Senior Ryan West led the way with 16 points. Miles Simelton had 13, Thomas Wilder 12 and scrappy Danny Mangers came off the bench to put up 11.
Oswego’s trio of starting guards, Wilder (8), Elliott McGaughy (6) and Simelton (5) combined for 19 of the team’s 26 assists.
“Two games this season where handling the ball and turnovers are the story of the game,” said Marmion Academy coach Ryan Paradise, whose Cadets were guilty of 20-plus turnovers for the second straight game.
“We’re 0-2 but we’re learning a lot about our team. A loss is a loss, albeit ugly, but we’re learning how we handle adversity. We can’t fly to the bottom, we’ve got to battle.”
Junior A.J. Bohr came off the bench to lead the Cadets with 13 points and junior Colin Kavanaugh added eight.
“I’m very proud of Bohr, he showed a lot of heart,” Paradise said. “I thought Ryan Glasgow was great in the first half and I thought Mac Phelan (off the bench) and Pete Stefanski showed some leadership I hadn’t seen before, too.”
Oswego led 16-4 after one quarter, 39-22 at the half and 61-29 after three, allowing Schnable to empty the bench. Twelve players scored for the Panthers.
