Boys Basketball: Reed-Custer gets its motor going vs Coal City

Reed-Custer coach Mark Porter had a simple explanation for his team’s 47-32 victory Monday night over Coal City in a Class 2A Seneca Regional quarterfinal.
“I think our kids just stepped up and wanted it,’’ Porter said. “I think the kids wanted to prove we’re a different team than we were at the end of January. We’re playing with a lot more intensity. We’re playing much better together.’’
Reed-Custer (11-17) will be in the second semifinal Wednesday against No. 2 seed Seneca.
“We’re going to have to come out and play really well,’’ Porter said.
Reed-Custer did that Monday, taking a 21-16 halftime lead behind eight points from Eric Robinson.
“I thought Eric Robinson was our catalyst,’’ Porter said. “He really put pressure on the ball, caused problems, got some tips, had some takes to the basket. He jump-started our motor tonight.’’
Ryan Johnson finished with 10 points, all in the second half, Tyler Foote had nine points and Tyler Schoonover seven.
“I thought we found the open man tonight,’’ Porter said. “We did a real nice job of that.’’
Coal City (7-20) closed the gap to 31-30 in the fourth quarter before Reed-Custer finished the game with a 16-2 run.
“Our defense tonight was pretty bad,’’ Coal City coach Brad Boresi said. “We gave up way too much dribble penetration, which allowed them to kick out and hit some big shots.
“Offensively, we settled for the outside shot way too much. Our goal was to get the ball inside. We’d get it there, but our post players weren’t able to make an aggressive move.’’
Nick Peters, a 6-foot-5 sophomore, led Coal City with 16 points.
“I felt we were capable of winning some more games,’’ Boresi said. “Next year I’ve got six guys coming back for their third year of varsity experience.’’
