Boys Basketball: Elgin Academy fights way past Harvest Christian

Elgin Academy had to work a bit harder the second time around against Harvest Christian.
The teams met Monday in the quarterfinals of the Hinckey-Big Rock Class 1A Regional, and the fourth-seeded Hilltoppers kept their season alive by holding off the fifth-seeded Lions 51-48.
The contest had a much different complexion than when the teams first met Jan. 5. Elgin Academy won that game 71-44, but there was no such blowout in the rematch.
The Lions were making their first-ever appearance in the IHSA state tournament, and they made themselves at home by charging out to a 12-4 lead by the end of the first quarter.
Elgin Academy (8-15) eventually got on track and took a 20-18 lead into halftime. The Hilltoppers were up 34-31 after the third quarter and several times appeared close to breaking the game open, but Harvest Christian (9-18) managed to stay within striking distance.
Michael Grabeck had 16 points to lead the way for Elgin Academy. Connor Flexman added 13 points, Tom Tunca had eight points, Jumel Julien chipped in seven points and Zach Bohenick had four points.
John Vislisel poured in a game-high 27 points for the Lions.
Elgin Academy, which has won two in a row, moves on to play top seed Hinckley-Big Rock in the semifinals at 6 p.m. on Wednesday. The winner advances to Friday’s regional title game.
