Boys Basketball: Seeds released for East Aurora’s sectional

Updated: February 9, 2012 8:24PM

One-loss Plainfield East earned the top seed Thursday in the 21-team East Aurora Class 4A Boys Basketball Sectional that features all eight of the 4A teams in The Beacon-News coverage area.

Downers Grove South (18-4) is No. 2, followed by two local teams in Metea Valley (20-3) at No. 3 and West Aurora (18-4) at No. 4.

“No surprises,” West coach Gordie Kerkman said. “It went pretty much how I thought it would, at least among the top six or seven teams.”

Downers South and Metea will both host regionals and are likely to be paired with seventh-seed Waubonsie Valley and sixth-seed Benet Academy, respectively, when pairings are announced Friday at about 4 p.m.

No. 1 Plainfield East should be paired with No. 8 Neuqua Valley, which is one of the other regional hosts.

That would leave the fourth-seeded Blackhawks and fifth-seeded Naperville North matched up at the remaining regional site, No. 12 Oswego. The Huskies won their first DuPage Valley meeting with West Aurora and lead the league standings with a 9-1 record. Both meet again next Friday.

To show how balanced the 21-team field is, Oswego lost to Plainfield East last week by just one point in a Southwest Prairie Conference game, and No. 15 seed Oswego East fell to the top seed by just three points, playing without one starter.

Other area teams and their seeds are: Geneva (14), Batavia (19) and East Aurora (21).

In Class 3A, Yorkville received the nod for the top seed in the five-team Sandwich Regional. It includes No. 2 Marmion, No. 3 Aurora Central, No. 4 Sandwich and No. 5 IMSA.

Kaneland grabbed the top seed at the Rochelle 3A Regional, which includes the No. 2 hosts, No. 3 Hampshire, No. 4 Burlington Central and No. 5 Sycamore.
