Updated: February 8, 2012 10:59PM

South Elgin used its outside shooting to smash East Aurora 62-41 in Upstate Eight Valley action.

Junior guard Jacob Maestranzi made five three-pointers and scored game-high 20 points in leading the Storm.

The victory snapped a four-game skid for the Storm (10-12, 3-7).

“Our team played great,” Maestranzi said. “We kept attacking and finding open guys. [East Aurora] is a tough team that can come back at any moment.”

Maestranzi and senior guard Eric Stazy used their brilliant marksmanship to shoot the Storm to a commanding 14-point lead at the break. Up 20-15 after the first quarter, South Elgin extended the halftime lead to 36-22. Maestranzi hit two three-pointers in scoring 11 points in the first half. Stazy, who scored all 15 of his points on five three-pointers, converted four from distance in the first half.

The Storm shot 12-of-17 from three-point range. Maestranzi scored all nine of his second half total on three three-pointers.

The Tomcats (2-20, 1-9) never came close to cutting the Storm lead. “We’re still improving,” East Aurora coach Wendell Jeffries said. “We take positives from each game.”

Sophomore guard Darius Wells hit two three-pointers in scoring 14 points for the Storm. He scored eight of his total in the second half.

Dejon Talbert and Tyrone Savage scored eight points apiece for the Tomcats.
