Evanston holds off Maine South

Evanston went on a roller-coaster ride Thursday at Maine South, but the Wildkits kept from getting sick with a 6-5 win over the Hawks.
Matt Carmichael and the Wildkits cruised through the first four innings. The right-handed senior starter took a no-hitter into the bottom of the fourth as Evanston led 5-0.
But the Hawks struck for five in the fifth, highlighted by John Gobbo’s three-run double with two outs. Justin Kleschen relieved Carmichael and got the last out of the inning without any further damage.
Trevor Forde’s sacrifice fly in the sixth inning turned out to be the game-winner.
“We’ve got some confidence back now on the field,” said Forde, whose team won for the fourth time in a row to improve to 13-8 overall and 5-4 in the CSL South. “We know that Matt’s a good pitcher, and most times he’s not going to give up that five spot.”
Jack Anderson earned his second save in three days and third of the season by pitching a scoreless seventh.
After pitching three innings of scoreless, no-hit relief in Tuesday’s 3-1 win over the Hawks, Anderson hit Jimmy Frankos before an error put runners on second and third.
Anderson got out of the jam by striking out Gobbo and forcing Will Krug into a ground ball to first base.
“We battled and had some great at-bats,” said Maine South coach Bill Milano, whose team fell to 9-7 and 5-3. “We had the right guys up in the last inning. Hats off to their guy. He gives you a different look and a different arm slot. We didn’t touch him two days ago. At least we saw him better this time.”
Anderson hasn’t allowed a hit in his last three appearances and lowered his ERA to 1.97 in 28 1/3 innings.
“Teams definitely don’t see someone like me every day,” Anderson said.
Gabe Derman led Evanston at the plate by going 3-for-3 with two doubles and two runs scored. Ameer Cannon added two hits in the win.
