Another cold, dreary afternoon didn’t keep Streamwood’s baseball team from playing some long ball Tuesday.

The Sabres had six hits on the day, and four of them went for home runs as they powered their way to a 9-1 win against Larkin in Upstate Eight Conference River Division play.

Tim Cohen began the barrage when he smacked a three-run homer in the first inning, and Nate Pearson added a solo blast in the second. Richie Gorski then connected for a three-run homer in fourth before Nick Pryor capped the onslaught with a solo shot in the fifth for Streamwood (17-2, 10-2), which won its third in a row.

“It was good to see them come out today and swing the bats,” Streamwood coach Steve Diversey said. “They were sitting back, hitting fastballs and being patient. You couldn’t ask for anything more today. We were able to get ahead and cruise.”

The Sabres had nine home runs on the season coming into the game, and that total gets a nice boost after the four round trippers against the Royals, all of which came off Larkin starter Kyle Newquist. The homers marked the first of the year for all four Streamwood players who went deep.

In addition to the impressive power display, the Sabres got a strong outing on the mound from Gorski. The junior tossed a complete game and allowed one earned run on four hits while striking out seven and walking none.

In a week where Streamwood has seven games scheduled in six days, the efficient effort by Gorski (3-0) was welcome.

“The changeup was working really good today and it was our go-to pitch,” Gorski said. “We’re loaded this week with a bunch of games so we’re kind of short on arms, but we’re just taking it one day at a time.”

One day after drawing 13 walks in a win against Elgin, the Sabres were the beneficiary of seven walks against the Royals. Six of those base on balls were issued by Newquist (1-3), who gave up seven earned runs on five hits while striking out six in his five innings of work.

Larkin (9-10, 3-8) scored its only run in the top of the sixth when Trevor Whitehead led off with a triple and scored on Drew Shore’s RBI groundout to short. Whitehead also had a double and finished 2-for-3 to lead an otherwise rough day at the plate for the Royals.

“(Streamwood) hit the fastballs and we didn’t,” Larkin coach Matt Esterino said. “It’s the same dimensions for us as them. They swung it well and they played a little bit of long ball, so it’s a credit to them and you’ve got to tip your hat.”

Pearson finished 2-for-4 with two runs scored, Patrick Manning scored three runs and Brandon Larkin-Guilfoyle drove in a run for the Sabres.

The teams continue their three-game series at Larkin today, and Esterino will be looking for better results from his squad.

“I didn’t really feel like that was us today,” Esterino said. “We didn’t play very well in any facet to be honest. We were a little bit flat, we didn’t come out too confident and we’re a much better ballclub than we showed.”
