EAST PEORIA, Ill. — Even down 2-0 in the sixth inning of the third place game, Lake Park's Missy Mazur said “she knew.”
Mazur smashed a two-run double and then scored the go-ahead run as the Lancers rallied to edge New Trier 3-2 Saturday in the Class 4A third-place game at EastSide Centre.at EastSide Centre.
“I just knew we were going to get ‘em,” said Iowa-bound Mazur, who improved to 24-5 in the circle. “We have some amazing hitters. I just love this team.”
New Trier (28-11) scored in the fifth when Jessica Snyder singled and scored when pitcher Kelsey Lee drove a double down the left field line. In the sixth, first baseman Molly Spence blasted her fourth home run to put the Trevians up 2-0.
But with one out in the sixth, Lynsey Ciezki (3-for-3) beat out an infield hit Carly Willert bunted and reached on an error. A delayed double steal moved the runners up before Mazur’s double. The Lake Park pitcher wound up on third on a throw to the plate and scored on Alexis Munaco’s fly to right.
The defensive play of the game, and the tournament, was provided by New Trier second baseman Brittany Benson, who backhanded a fly in right with her back to the infield.
