Lane catcher Daniela Torres showed why she is the best player in the city as the Indians continued their reign as Public League champs with an impressive 9-2 victory over Washington in the title game Saturday at UIC.

Torres went 2-for-3 with three runs scored and three RBI as the heavily favored Indians (26-6) won their second straight league championship and 12th in the past 14 years. The Miami of Ohio recruit led off the first inning with a walk, sped to third on a wild pitch and scored on a single by Jackie Manrique, who later scored on another wild pitch for a 2-0 lead.

Torres then hit a two-run double off the center field fence and scored on a Manrique double as part of a four-run second inning as Lane took a 6-0 lead. In the third, she homered to right.

“I think we’re a good offensive team all the way around,” Torres said. “Anyone can get it done at any given time, so I think that shows our experience and our preparation for games like these. We have high expectations for ourselves.”

Six different players combined for nine hits for Lane, including two each by Manrique and Stephanie Huber, who finished the scoring with a two-run single in the fifth. Junior pitcher Jazzy Camacho drove in a run with a bunt single and Samantha Nikolich and Maria Joyce both doubled. Camacho (14-2) hurled a four-hitter, walking four and striking out 10.

“This feels terrific and I’m looking forward to the [state playoffs],” Camacho said. “I don’t feel as though this was my personal best game, but I’m glad I had my defense behind me because I know nothing is going to get past them.”

Washington (17-4-1) received a two-run homer from pitcher Ruby Liptack, while Kendra Noyles went 2-for-3.
