Over in the Lake Division of the North Suburban Conference, pitching always rules the day, as Katie Buczynski has pitched Lake Zurich High to the division title.
But over here in the NSC Prairie Division, hitting is the key to victory.
Division champ Vernon Hills has a lot of it, and here on Tuesday, second-place Antioch showed it can swing the sticks with the best of them.
Against a solid Lakes Eagles club, the Sequoits pounded out 19 hits and rolled to a dominating 16-3 victory over their intradistrict rival.
Antioch is now 16-9 overall and 7-3 in the division, while Lakes is 11-13 and 5-6.
Antioch got solid production from every spot in the lineup -- especially the Nos. 7-9 hitters ( Jen Precht, 1-for-4, 2 runs scored; Alli Antilla, 2-for-4, three RBI, and Kalie Lindstrom, 2-for-5, two RBI), who were a combined 5 of 13 with four runs scored and 5 RBIs.
"We started hitting the ball early and got it going right away," said Antioch coach Mary Easton. "It was nice to see some production out of our Nos. 7-9 hitters. We haven't had that all season."
The Sequoits broke this one open early, scoring eight times in the third inning off loser Shannon Cooley, who lasted just three frames.
Lindsay Callanan led Antioch's attack, going 5 for 5 with 1 RBI and 3 runs scored.
Lakes' offensive leader was Cooley, who went 3 for 3 with 2 runs scored.
Antioch's winning pitcher was Ashley Mysliwiec, but freshman Olivia Duehr worked the final two frames and allowed just 1 run on 2 hits and ended the game by retiring the final five hitters she faced.
Today, Antioch will host Marengo in non-league play, before hosting Lakes on Thursday and battling Stevenson and Zion-Benton next week.
